Description and Uses

Albizia ferruginea (Ferruginea albizia) is a tropical tree from West Africa. It is mainly grown for its timber crops (medium shelflife), The crop is harvested by total removing. It starts flowering after 3 - 6 years. The tree`s wood is called Ferruginea albizia wood and has a density of 600 - 700 kg/m³. After 28 years the tree can be totally removed as it reached its commercial and ecological goal. Albizia ferruginea has a lifespan of 80 years.


Environmental limitations

The tree is 39 meters tall. It is medium growing and tolerates not less light than full sun. Albizia ferruginea has a shallow root-system and forms symbiotic relations (endo-mycorrhiza high). It is able to fix nitrogen with Microbacteriaceae bacteria. The tree`s flower-morphology is hermaphroditic and is pollinated by .

Albizia ferruginea thrives in an altitude of 700 to 1200 meters above sea-level (tropical). The minimum temperature is 4°C and optimally between 20 - 30°C. The optimal rainfall is 1450 mm/year. Without irrigation the annual rainfall should be between 600 - 1700 mm (L/m²). The optimal soil-pH is between 5.0 - 8.0 in a soil texture of loam.
