Argentinian cumaru - Amburana cearensis

Description and Uses

Amburana cearensis (Argentinian cumaru) is a tropical tree from Amazone. It is mainly grown for its timber crops (long shelflife), The crop is harvested by total removing. It starts flowering after 11 - 14 years. The first yield will be inapplicable but in its top season there will be a yield of 30 m in 50 years. The tree`s wood is called Cumaru and has a density of 520 - 650 kg/m³. Regarding firewood production the tree`s growing speed is medium, its energetic value is 4600 ckal/kg and the wood`s drying speed is slow; for firewood production it is not ideal. After 90 years the tree can be totally removed as it reached its commercial and ecological goal. Amburana cearensis has a lifespan of 250 years.

Environmental limitations

The tree is 35 meters tall. It is medium growing and tolerates not less light than partial shade. Amburana cearensis has a shallow root-system and forms symbiotic relations (endo-mycorrhiza). It is able to fix nitrogen with Microbacteriaceae bacteria.

Amburana cearensis thrives in an altitude of 25 to 1100 meters above sea-level (tropical). The minimum temperature is 6°C and optimally between 23 - 30°C. The optimal rainfall is 2900 mm/year. Without irrigation the annual rainfall should be between 900 - 4000 mm (L/m²). The optimal soil-pH is between 5.0 - 7.0 in a soil texture of loam.
