Bishop wood - Bischofia javanica

Description and Uses

Bischofia javanica (Bishop wood) is a tropical tree from Malaysia & Indonesia. It is mainly grown for its timber crops (long shelflife), but also

can be produced. The crop is harvested by total removing. It starts flowering after 8 - 9 years.

. Medical uses include;

The bark contains - n/a - (9.70% - 14.40%). There is toog oil extracted by expeller pressing from the tree`s seed/nut yielding 30 - 54% oil. The tree`s wood is called Uriam and has a density of 540 - 620 kg/m³. Regarding firewood production the tree`s growing speed is fast, its energetic value is 3700 ckal/kg and the wood`s drying speed is slow; for firewood production it is not ideal. After 8 years the tree can be totally removed as it reached its commercial and ecological goal. Bischofia javanica has a lifespan of 30 years.

Environmental limitations

The tree is 42 meters tall. It is fast growing and tolerates not less light than partial shade. Bischofia javanica has a shallow root-system and forms symbiotic relations

(endo-mycorrhiza). It is not able to fix nitrogen. The tree`s flower-morphology is dioecious and is pollinated by bees. Bischofia javanica is deciduous in dry season and not allelopathic and has no thorns.

Bischofia javanica thrives in an altitude of 0 to 1800 meters above sea-level (tropical). The minimum temperature is 0°C and optimally between 20 - 30°C. The optimal rainfall is 2450 mm/year. Without irrigation the annual rainfall should be between 1200 - 2500 mm (L/m²). The optimal soil-pH is between 6.0 - 7.0 in a soil texture of loam. To salt it is a bit tolerant to wind a bit tolerant and to fire intolerant.
