Description and Uses

Cannabis sativa (Weed plant) is a tropical plant from North West India. It is mainly grown for its psychedelic crops (medium shelflife), but also

can be produced. The crop is harvested by hand picking. It starts flowering after 0 - 1 years.

. Medical uses include;

The flower contains Tetrahydrocannabinol (1% - 15%). There is THC-oil extracted by steam distillation from the plant`s flower yielding 4 - 15% oil. The plant`s wood is called hempfibre-board and has a density of 580 - 600 kg/m³. Regarding firewood production the plant`s growing speed is very fast, its energetic value is 4200 ckal/kg and the wood`s drying speed is slow; for firewood production it is not ideal. Cannabis sativa is an annual crop.

Environmental limitations

The plant is 3 meters tall. It is very fast growing and tolerates not less light than full sun. Cannabis sativa has a shallow root-system and forms symbiotic relations

(endo-mycorrhiza). It is able to fix nitrogen with - bacteria. The plant`s flower-morphology is dioecious and is pollinated by . Cannabis sativa is evergreen and a bit allelopathic and has no thorns.

Cannabis sativa thrives in an altitude of 0 to 1900 meters above sea-level (tropical). The minimum temperature is 4°C and optimally between 18 - 30°C. The optimal rainfall is 1650 mm/year. Without irrigation the annual rainfall should be between 400 - 2500 mm (L/m²). The optimal soil-pH is between 6.0 - 7.0 in a soil texture of loam. To salt it is intolerant to wind a bit tolerant and to fire intolerant.
