Description and Uses

Argyreia nervosa (Hawaiian babyrose) is a tropical vine from Polonesia. It is mainly grown for its psychedelic crops (long shelflife), The crop is harvested by hand picking. After 14 years the vine can be totally removed as it reached its commercial and ecological goal. Argyreia nervosa has a lifespan of 25 years.


Environmental limitations

The vine is 3 meters tall. It is medium growing and tolerates not less light than shade tolerant. Argyreia nervosa has a deep root-system and forms symbiotic relations (endo-mycorrhiza). It is not able to fix nitrogen.

Argyreia nervosa thrives in an altitude of 0 to 500 meters above sea-level (tropical). The minimum temperature is 0°C and optimally between 25 - 35°C. The optimal rainfall is 2200 mm/year. Without irrigation the annual rainfall should be between 1200 - 2000 mm (L/m²). The optimal soil-pH is between 5.0 - 7.0 in a soil texture of loam.
